Setsubun is a Japanese tradition carried out when a year by the lunar calendar starts anew in spring and the Japanese make prayers for a prosperous and safe new year to come. Tsushima Jinja Shrine celebrates the festival with a bean throwing ritual, meant to scare off and dispel of any evil or misfortune. Special guests are allowed to make prayers at the Main Hall before getting on stage and throwing beans out to event-goers (three times from 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 3:00 pm).
