Take a Peek Into the Gorgeous and Colorful World of the Geisha!

Nagoya's oldest traditional dining establishment offers an easy way to experience traditional Japanese performing arts first-hand.

Geisha are women trained in the arts of conversation and hospitality, as well as traditional Japanese song, dance, and musical instruments. Their lavish kimonos and unique makeup make then instantly recognizable. Full-fledged geisha who have mastered the art of entertaining guests are called geiko, while young geisha in training are called maiko.

Geiko and maiko have traditionally lived and trained in houses called okiya, of which Nagoya has none. However, the geiko and maiko of Nagoya have Meigiren, a geisha union, to look after them and help manage their activities. The union currently has 21 members.

Geisha performances are normally exclusive affairs, but in this event, the elegant geiko and adorable maiko of Meigiren gather at the restaurant Kawabun. Watch them perform traditional Japanese dance, learn their games, and take this rare opportunity to get a taste of the secret world of geisha!
