Hope it into fruition!
—Lucky Daruma Dolls await your wishes—

Daruma dolls are made in the image of Bodhidharma, a Buddhist monk credited for creating Zen Buddhism in ancient China and known in Japan as "Daruma". Originally sold with the eyeballs unpainted, the tradition is to offer a doll as a gift to someone who is setting objectives. The doll owner will then paint one of the eyes while asking Daruma for help in achieving it. The other eyeball is to be painted upon reaching the goal, thus granting Daruma full eyesight.
Daikoji is known as the "Daruma Temple" and annually hosts the Lucky Daruma Doll Festival on Coming of Age Day, beseeching a year of safety and health to the community's households.
Of particular interest is the giant bonfire on which loads of Daruma dolls from the previous year are burned together.
